The collection comprises: illustrated catalogs; pamphlets and mail folders; sales literature; parts and service manuals; wholesale price lists; confidential circulars to dealers; handwritten and typescript advertising contracts, including completed printed form requests for advertising (1869-1903); miscellaneous publications issued by the New York, Hamburg, and London branches of the piano manufacturer Steinway & Sons; photocopies of correspondence of Henry Ziegler (1880-1914) interleaved with photocopies of C.F.T. Steinway's letters to Henry Ziegler (Ziegler books); photocopy of the diary of William Steinway (1861-1896); photocopies of 3 notebooks of confidential circulars to dealers. Items of special note include: an incomplete copy of the firm's first illustrated catalog (1865); illustrated catalogs of pianos in period and art cases (undated); James Huneker's monograph, The Steinway Collection of Paintings by American Artists, together with Prose Portraits of the Great Composers (1919); the Steinway family tree (1917).
